Paying privately: a planning guide

Most care starts as private pay. The plan that matters is how long the money lasts.

Quick answer

Divide the money available for care by the gap between monthly cost and monthly income: at the 2025 Oklahoma assisted living median of about $6,045 a month, a parent with $2,500 a month in income and $150,000 in savings covers the $3,545 gap for roughly 42 months.

How long will savings last in Oklahoma assisted living?

Divide the money available for care by the gap between monthly cost and monthly income: at the 2025 Oklahoma assisted living median of about $6,045 a month, a parent with $2,500 a month in income and $150,000 in savings covers the $3,545 gap for roughly 42 months.

Build in increases. CareScout's Oklahoma assisted living median rose 25% in one year, and individual buildings raise care-level fees as needs grow. Recalculate every year.

Should we sell the house to pay for care?

Often, but not always: the home does not count toward SoonerCare's asset limit while it remains exempt, so families nearing SoonerCare should talk with an elder law attorney before selling, while families with long private-pay runways frequently sell to fund care.

Renting the home, a reverse mortgage or a bridge loan are alternatives. Each has tax and benefit consequences that depend on the details.

How does long-term care insurance work for assisted living?

Most policies pay a daily or monthly benefit once the insured needs help with two or more activities of daily living or has a cognitive impairment, after an elimination period, often 90 days; many cover assisted living and home care as well as nursing homes.

File the claim early, because the elimination period starts only after the insurer accepts the claim. Ask the facility whether it bills the insurer directly.

When should a private-pay family plan for SoonerCare?

As soon as the savings runway is shorter than about five years, because the 60-month look-back on transfers and the limited ADvantage slots both reward early planning.

Ask any assisted living center or nursing home, before moving in, whether a resident who spends down can stay on SoonerCare or ADvantage, and whether there is a minimum private-pay period.

What should be in a private-pay contract?

The monthly rate and exactly what it includes, every care-level and medication fee, how and when rates can rise, the notice required before a discharge, and what happens to prepaid fees if the resident leaves or dies.

Oklahoma requires an assisted living center's admission and discharge criteria to be written into the service contract, so read those clauses as closely as the price.
