Assisted living center or residential care home?

The names sound alike; the licenses allow very different things.

Quick answer

An assisted living center may provide intermittent nursing, medication administration and dementia care under OAC 310:663, while a residential care home under OAC 310:680 provides room, meals and supportive assistance and may not provide medical care.

What is the main difference between an assisted living center and a residential care home in Oklahoma?

An assisted living center may provide intermittent nursing, medication administration and dementia care under OAC 310:663, while a residential care home under OAC 310:680 provides room, meals and supportive assistance and may not provide medical care.

Residential care home residents must be ambulatory and essentially able to manage their own affairs. Assisted living residents can need considerably more help.

Which is more common around Tulsa?

Assisted living, by a wide margin: OSDH's roster lists 45 assisted living centers with 3,193 beds in the six counties, against 5 residential care homes with 97 beds.

In practice most Tulsa families looking for help with daily care and medications end up comparing assisted living centers, while residential care homes fill a narrower role.

Which costs less?

No published Oklahoma median exists for residential care homes, so compare quotes; the assisted living median for 2025 is $72,540 a year, and residential care homes are often, though not always, less expensive because they provide fewer services.

Price the services you actually need. A cheaper home that cannot manage medications may force a second move within months.

How do the inspections compare?

OSDH inspects both through its Long Term Care Service and posts both kinds of survey documents in the same public file system at surveys.health.ok.gov, so you can read a residential care home's inspection history exactly the way you would an assisted living center's.

The difference is what the inspectors measure against. An assisted living survey covers medication administration, nursing supervision, assessments and dementia disclosures where they apply; a residential care home survey covers the supportive services the license allows. Neither type carries a star rating.

What questions separate the two on a tour?

Ask who gives medications and whether a nurse is ever on site, what happens after a hospital stay, whether residents can use a walker or wheelchair, and how the home handles a resident who becomes confused at night.

A residential care home that answers those questions honestly will usually tell you when it is not the right fit. That candor is worth more than a lower monthly price, because a second move within a few months costs a parent more than money.
