Is home care cheaper than assisted living in Oklahoma?
Only at lower hours: CareScout's 2025 Oklahoma home care median works out to about $33 an hour, so roughly 42 hours a week of help equals the $6,045 monthly assisted living median, and anything beyond that costs more at home.
| Paid hours per week | Monthly home care at about $33/hour | Versus assisted living median ($6,045) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | $1,430 | less |
| 20 | $2,860 | less |
| 30 | $4,290 | less |
| 40 | $5,720 | less |
| 44 | $6,292 | more |
| 50 | $7,150 | more |
| 60 | $8,580 | more |
| 84 | $12,012 | more |
| 168 | $24,024 | more |
When does staying home make more sense?
When help is needed for part of the day, the house is safe or can be made safe, a family member covers nights, and the person strongly wants to stay; ADvantage can pay for personal care at home for those who qualify.
Adult day care two or three days a week can stretch a home-care plan considerably.
When does assisted living make more sense?
When help is needed at unpredictable times, nights are unsafe, isolation is wearing a parent down, or the family caregiver is exhausted; assisted living centers have staff on site around the clock.
Ask how many staff are awake overnight. If it is one, Oklahoma requires the center to tell you before move-in.
What hidden costs come with staying at home?
Home modifications such as grab bars, ramps and walk-in showers, a medical alert system, meal delivery, transportation, and the unpaid hours a family caregiver puts in are the costs families most often leave out of the home care math.
Assisted living has its own add-ons, chiefly care-level fees that rise as needs grow and fees for medication management, so compare total monthly cost on both sides, not just the hourly rate against the base rent.
Can we try one and switch later?
Yes, and many families do: a few months of home care plus adult day care often shows whether staying home is sustainable, and some assisted living centers offer short respite stays that let a parent try the setting before committing.
If you start with home care, keep a written record of what help is needed at which hours. That record becomes the basis for an assisted living assessment or an ADvantage application if the plan changes.
